GUIDELINES FOR WRITING A MARTIAL ARTS THESIS

  1. Purpose
    Vovinam Martial Arts Thesis offers an opportunity for advanced disciples to participate in:
      o Building and further developing the Vovinam Viet Vo Dao discipline
      o Enriching the repertoire of Vietnamese martial arts
      o Demonstrating candidate’s ability, knowledge and solicitude for the future of the discipline
  2. Requirements
    Your Thesis can be written in one of the following two formats:
      Format 1: A Martial Arts Technical Thesis
      A technical Thesis essay with contributing content and values contributing or dedicating toward building the Vovinam Viet Vo Dao discipline such as:
      o A new invention or creation
      o A new solution for an problem
      o A new enhancement or improvement of an existing teaching (technical or theoretical)
      Your Thesis must align with the theoretical and technical principles of the discipline and offer some practical values that may be applied widely throughout the discipline.
      Format 2: A Martial Arts Aspiration
      The content of the Thesis may be based on the following outline:
      o A brief biography of your Vovinam
      o Martial arts achievements (winning, participating, offering…)
      o Personal contributions to Việt Võ Đạo discipline
      o Ideas to improve our Việt Võ Đạo discipline
      o Aspirations for the discipline and its future
      The content of your Martial Arts Aspiration must be realistic and aligning with the general direction of Vovinam martial arts disciplines.
  3. Thesis Review Process
      a. Advanced candidates (red belts) applying to participate in the belt exam and submit a proposed Thesis at least one months in advance of exam date
      b. The candidate prepares the proposed Thesis based on the provided instructions
      c. If Thesis is not satisfactory, the Board of Assessment and Examination may request additional information or offer revision advice before announcing final result
      d. The candidate completes the Thesis submit it to the Board of Assessment and Examination
      e. The candidate presents Thesis and defends it in front of the Board of Assessment and Examination
      f. The Board of Assessment and Examination reviews, approves your Thesis submission
      g. The Board of Examiniation and Assessment may use your Thesis content as teaching materials if deemed appropriate, and shares it on Vovinam library and archive
  4. Format and Layout
    Your Thesis may use the following layout format, if desired:
      • Preamble
      • Tribute or attribution (to other helpers or teachers)
      • Candidate’s profile
        o Candidate portrait photo (type used in ID card)
        o Name & date of birth o Records of past belt level promotions (level, instructor, date/months/year, school…)
        o Achievements (past exam or contest awards, teaching credits, past contributions to discipline)
      • The body of your Thesis (Martial Arts Technical Thesis or Martial Arts Technical Aspiration)
